Description: Oakes creates such an appealing and believable character in Addy. Not only does her interaction with the other characters ring true, but her internal dialog is so genuine, it's hard not to chuckle or cringe along with her from time to time. Occasionally, Addy addresses the reader directly, a device which could easily have gone wrong, but Oakes does it with rare skill and it just makes Addy that much more charming and real. In all, The Veil is both a fun read and a well-wrought work from a talented new author.
