Description: The Boneshaker is one of those novels that I read all in one night -- and it was a night when I really shouldn't have been up reading until dawn. It was that kind of novel. I couldn't put it down. For me, the best part of the novel was the main character, Natalie, a girl who isn't ashamed to like (and be good with) engineering and clockworks. She's a strong girl who bends, but never breaks, throughout the whole story, and I think she's a great role model for tweens. Kate Milford is a gifted writer who put together a tight story that gets off to a fast start, doesn't leave you bored in the middle, and has a satisfying ending. She brings the midwest in 1914 to life, and I quickly forgot that I was reading about a girl who lived in a different time. She took great advantage of every opportunity for weird and eerie carnival imagery. I was especially impressed with the religious imagery that she wove into her story I've read a couple of young adult novels in the past where the authors tried to cram references to Jesus into stories where they didn't belong, and Milford could teach those authors a thing or two about how to do it right. The threads of good and evil weave their way through the whole story, subtle, but powerful enough to become the framework around which the entire story is built.
