Description: Berlin was the sixth largest city in the world in 1945, and was a hub of German military activity. There were aircraft assembly plants as well as the headquarters of the Third Reich located in Berlin. The anti-aircraft defenses around Berlin were some of the most concentrated in the European theater. The British bombed their targets at night, so it was not uncommon for British and American bombers to pass each other to and from targets. The bomber stream was well over 100 miles long on February 3rd. The weather was mostly clear, which improved bombing results. Very little fighter opposition was met, but the flak barrage was intense, and many bombers succumbed to it. Americn planes were lost over the target some were damaged and either crashed, ditched, or the crew bailed out on the way home men were killed, taken prisoner, or landed in neutral countries but the large majority made it safely back to England.
