Review:
The best by far.
When I decided to go Vegan last November, like with many things in my life; I did my fair share of research on the subject. I purchased a few cookbooks and several books on Veganism. While most of them were helpful (The Complete Idiot's Guide to Veganism, Skinny Bitch) other's I found to be written like a high school report on Veganism (Vegan Freak). The facts were there, but it seemed like one line after the other on the subject ended with "For more information on this topic, read this other book." Which made me think maybe I should have just purchased those other books in the first place. So, for whatever reason, the books I bought were just lacking... something... Then I lost interest in reading about Veganism altogether and just started living the life.
I subscribed to a few Vegan Podcasts for more information and stumbled upon "Erik's Diner". It was from here I learned about Vegan.com and the books he's written. "Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating" is BY FAR the best Vegan book I have come across. Every subject is laid out with it's own easy to read chapter. And Erik makes you feel like you're right there, part of the story by actually taking the time to write out the situation the way it happenned rather than "If you want to know more, go buy this other book." Thank you Erik Marcus for writing this book. I just started reading "Meat Market" last night and I'm very excited.

A good overview on vegan issues and philosophy
A very good book for newbie vegans who need to expand their library. There was nothing in here that I hadn't read elsewhere, but the book provides a very user friendly summary of many of the basic vegan issues and philosophy... I do recommend the book, though it's not necessary a "must have".

response to Chris (Austin, TX)
I wanted to respond to Chris (Austin, TX). I had the same problem viewing the source notes because I downloaded the ebook from vegan.com, which for some reason left out ten pages of the book, which contain the source notes. When I purchased the print version, the notes were there, just as in the table of contents. I really did enjoy this book, because Erik Marcus' writing style is very cogent and concise, while also very narrative. The amount of sourcing is very impressive, with footnotes listed at least 2-3 times per paragraph, when a side story is not being told about some unfortunate animal rescued by his friends at the Farm Sanctuary. Overall, this book is excellent and provides a great deal of information on animal use and reasons to switch to a vegan lifestyle.

Wake-up Call
This book was a major wake up call for me. I have been a vegetarian for over seven years and thought I was doing everything I could for myself, the environment, and most importantly, the animals who suffer for the food we eat. I never thought I would go completely vegan, but I came across this book and decided to read it after reading all the reviews. I had never read a book as fast as I did this one. By the end, I knew I wanted to go vegan.
This book talks about many different reasons why a vegan diet is much more beneficial than the Standard American Diet, or even a vegetarian diet. The most eye opening for me was how the animals of the dairy and egg industries are treated. The most upsetting was learning that veal calves are a direct product of the milk industry. I had never even considered that concept. This book may change the way you eat for the rest of your life. I highly recommend it!!!

People will believe anything it seems
Okay, maybe I am greatly missing something, and someone can inform me of where they are, but I couldn't find most the guys sources. There were numbers beside certain facts, but I looked into the back of the book, and everything, and found NO connection with the numbers listing where the fact originated. I went to the index, and what was listed as recources, but they had NO connection with the numbers which were listed besides the facts in which he put forth. When I read a book which is suppose to expose new information to me, I would expect there to be an extensive list of sources so that I can look up the information and the people in which he obtained the information from. What I found in the resources section were links to papers I should read which all contain biased info which were mainly on why you should eat Vegan. I don't deny that the guy truly believes what he is doing is right, and that he is truly trying to help people, but the fact that I can't find sources bothers me. Anyways, this guy talks about how great it will be to live long -- personally, I could give a crap....last thing I want to be is freaking 50yrs old, but that is just my opinion. I don't get what the point of him writing numbers beside facts was if he isn't going to back those numbers up with source information. Read at your own risk. There is always the chance that I obtained a copy which left out this information, or that I am just missing it, but until I see a source list on his information, and am able to see completely the studies he includes, which talk about people living longer, being healthier, etc, then I can't fully believe him.
