There are four essays covering nearly 1,500 years in the history of the city. Gideon Foerster of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem traces its emergence from the insignificant harbour of Strato's Tower to Herod's capital. Glanville Downey describes Christian Caesarea; Irving M. Levey writes on Caesarea and the Jews, and Harry W. Hazard takes the story down to the end of the Crusades. All are written and researched with abundant notes and bibliographies.
