Description

Two years after the publication of Of Mice and Men, Harry Thornton Moore published The Novels of John Steinbeck: A First Critical Study (Chicago: Normandy House, 1939). According to Moore, Steinbeck’s characters are quite realistic but are trapped in a web of circumstance that makes their fates inevitable. This initial reaction was to become a typical response from a critical majority that considered Steinbeck’s work as an integral part of the American Naturalist movement, where human beings had little say so or ability to affect change in their lives. Moore also lamented the fact that the book depicted violence without tragedy, a trait that made its message melodramatic rather than eliciting pathos.
