Альбом "Тет-а-Тет" Анри Картье-Брессона включает в себя портреты наиболее видных личностей второй половины 20 века. Фотографии представлены в нехронологическом порядке, но организованы таким образом, чтобы показать связи и параллели поз и сходство лиц, знакомые образы в непривычной обстановке: очень молодой Трумэн Капоте в мятой майке, на заре литературной славы; очень старая Колетт, которая сохраняет свой проницательный взгляд; Матисс со своими птицами; Сартр со своей трубкой... Есть также группа портретов неизвестных людей: племена из Кашмира, проститутки в Мехико, женщины на юге Испании, вечно одетые в черное. И, как отметил в предисловии к "Тет-а-Тет" искусствовед Е.Х. Гомбрих, при создании этих портретов, Карте-Брессон значительно отошел от техник "светского" фотографа, напротив - "он всегда предпочитал лежать в засаде в ожидании выразительного момента".
