This collection has won two major awards - the Patrick Kavanagh award (1995) and the American Ireland Fund/Listowel Writers Week Poetry Prize (1996). The title poem Mathematics is a witty sonnet sequence which explores love and loss through the language and imagery of mathematics. It sets the question Where is your Euclid now my love, and in a book that ranges from the devastating elegy The Wake in the House to the tenderness of Sick Child this question provokes complex and subtle answers. In the end though, it is the emotional intensity of the writing that remains in the mind.
