Mention the term behavioral arc]iaeolog\* to a group of prehistorians and you will probably hear something like. "It's the study of formation processes." or "It's just part of the new archaeology." A more critical theorist might add. "It's positivism and that's out of elite." These comments touch upon aspects of the behavioralist program but do not accurately describe it.Tins book attempts to define behavioral archaeology more comprehensively in order to illustrate its role in the theoretical landscape of contemporary archaeology. To flesh out points of agreement or dissent, the perspectives of the chapters range from those of behavioral archaeology, old and new. to those of historical. Selectionist, and postprocessual archaeology.A group of research strategies called behavioral archaeology first appeared, in published form, in a short paper entitled "Expanding Archaeology" (Reid. Rathje. and Schrffer 1974). It highlighted the unique role of the artifact in archaeological research. One of its key insights was that freedom to pursue the behavioral relationships between people and objects, regardless of time or place, would improve future studies of archaeology and unmask a new order of phenomena for the behavioral sciences.
