In our modern, science-oriented society, it seems jarringly strange that a strong belief in creationism has re-emerged. Toumey (anthropology, Univ. of North Carolina) here addresses this paradox, taking a deep look at creationism from 1981 to 1987. Unlike other authors, who have investigated the historical aspect (e.g., Ronald Numbers in The Creationists , Knopf, 1992), Toumey looks at the movement opposing evolution through a sociological and anthropological filter. Creationism, he asserts, is a system of beliefs that helps a group of people come to terms with modern society. An important distinction between biblical creationism and the more recent scientific creationism becomes evident early on, as the author notes that the new proponents have utilized science to prove their points.
