"Die Lemuren auf Madagaskar tragen zum Erhalt der wenigen noch verbliebenen Wälder bei, weil sie die Früchte vieler Baumarten verzehren und damit deren Samen verbreiten. Der Braune Maki sorgt so allein für den Erhalt von mindestens zwanzig verschiedenen Baumarten. Ohne die Lemuren gibt es also auf Dauer keinen Wald - und ohne den Wald, von dem sie sich ernähren, können die Lemuren nicht existieren. Ohne den Wald geht also die Artenvielfalt Madagaskars unwiederbringlich verloren. Ohne den Wald versiegt aber auch das Wasser, und ohne Wasser gibt es keinen Reisanbau - weshalb langfristig auch die Menschen nicht überleben können." (Nachwort, S. 143)
