  Pharmaceutical manufacturers currently perform most of the drug formulations any given patient may need, work that in the past used to be the main professional practice of the pharmacist. The degree of sophistication of their knowledge of the action of drugs in living organisms has given pharmacists the opportunity to become the chemical experts in the healthcare team. And rightfully so; they contribute to providing the best therapy for a patient because their unique training allows them to look at the chemical structure of a drug and identify potential drug interactions and additional sensitivities based on the patient’s profile. One example of this is the cross-sensitivity to saccharin experienced by those allergic to sulfonamides. Looking at the chemical structures allows one to discern that the reason for the cross-sensitivity is the similarities in certain functional groups in the two substances.

  It is this explosion of knowledge in the molecular actions of drugs that warrants the need to introduce the core concepts in a single foundational course. These concepts will be essential to the in-depth coverage of drug classes in subsequent pharmacology and therapeutics courses.

  We begin our discussion of these core concepts by reviewing the chemistry involved in the actions of drug molecules.
