With the release of the 8th edition of Medical Parasitology by Markell, John, and Krotoski, published by WB Saunders Company, the reader is offered the latest information on immunodiagnosis and treatment of parasitic infections. It examines the complete range of parasites that prey on humans, including helminths, protozoa, and arthropods. The first three chapters explore the protozoa, and beginning with Chapter Three, the lumen-dwelling protozoa. The areas of the body covered include the intestines, mouth, upper respiratory, and urogenital tracts. Tables provided at the end this chapter, and many of the other chapters, give an overview of the disease, parasite, means and locations of infections, clinical features, and laboratory diagnosis. Chapter Four is devoted to malaria, including general morphology, life cycle, epidemiology, treatment, and prevention. In the fifth chapter flagellates are discussed in both their insect hosts, and in the tissues and blood stream of humans. Pictures of the parasites and infected sites in humans are provided in pertinent cases.

The trematodes, cestodes, and nematodes are covered in the next four chapters. Detailed figures of microscopic sections, life cycles, organisms, and infected hosts emphasize points of diagnostic importance. Again, each chapter ends in a table review including disease, parasite, means of infection, location of larvae and the adults in humans, clinical features, and laboratory diagnosis. Symptoms, pathogenesis, epidemiology and control, and treatments are also included for each species presented.

The chapter on parasitic infections in immunocompromised hosts provides a good source of reference for the physician treating patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), as well as other acquired causes of immune incompetence. It includes infections due to malnourishment, malignancies, prolonged use of corticosteroids, and the cytotoxic effects of radiation and drugs.

Chapter 12, Signs and Symptoms, is devoted to the limited ways the body responds to parasitic disease. It proves useful for the physician faced with the difficult task of diagnosis. The signs are briefly covered, only in connection to a parasitic cause. Chapter 13, Pseudo Parasites and Pitfalls, while not an extensive list, includes what the authors feel are the most important types of artifacts that can be easily mistaken for parasites.

Chapters 14 and 15 consist of the standard laboratory methods available for examination of specimens, including their limitations and advantages. The final chapter is on testing by immunodiagnostic techniques. Commercially available kits are listed, as are antibody and antigen detection tests and serological tests.

As stated in its introduction, Medical Parasitology's primarily intended audience is medical students and physicians. To this extent it would be an excellent text and reference book. It is concise and does not include endless details which the reader might feel is of marginal interest. Although it does not contain a glossary, the chapters on signs and symptoms, and immunodiagnostic techniques serve as glossaries in the manner they are presented.

It is not intended for the beginning student in clinical laboratory science, and it would not provide the basic levels of detail needed to complete the total picture of parasitic identification. The same is true for the index, which did not include such basic terms as trophozoite and cyst. However, the clinical laboratory scientist would find it a useful reference book for understanding the manner in which parasitic organisms are acquired, and the diseases that they produce in humans.
